A lab-associated incident is a plausible hypothesis supported by some U.S. agencies; zoonotic spillover is supported by many scientists and other agencies. No publicly available evidence has conclusively established either pathway.

NIAID funded an EcoHealth Alliance grant studying bat coronaviruses; EcoHealth subcontracted some work to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The scope, oversight, and description of that research became a central political dispute.
Scientific communications
Scientists privately discussed unusual features of the virus, then published a paper arguing that SARS-CoV-2 was not a laboratory construct or purposefully manipulated virus. Critics allege Fauci improperly shaped that conclusion; Fauci and the authors deny a cover-up.
